Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Professional Repair

1. Weak or warm airflow

If the air feels weak or barely cool even after you’ve cleaned the filters, the coils may be clogged, the gas may be low or the compressor may be struggling.

2. Unusual noises

Rattling can mean loose parts. Grinding or squealing points to fan motor or bearing issues. A loud buzzing or clicking from the outdoor unit can mean an electrical fault. Don’t ignore new noises.

3. Water leaking indoors

Water dripping from the indoor unit usually means a blocked drain pipe or a tilted unit. Left alone, it can damage walls, paint and furniture.

4. Bad smells

A musty smell means mould or bacteria in the coil or drain tray. A burning smell means an electrical problem — switch the AC off immediately and call a technician.

5. Frequent tripping or switching off

If the AC trips the MCB or keeps switching off, there may be a wiring fault, a failing capacitor or compressor overload. Repeated tripping can damage the compressor.

6. Ice on pipes or coils

Ice usually means low refrigerant or blocked airflow. Running the AC like this can harm the compressor.

7. Sudden jump in power bills

If your usage hasn’t changed but bills have gone up, the AC is likely working harder because of dirt, low gas or a failing part.

Repair or replace?

Repair is usually worth it for ACs under 8–10 years old with a single fault. If an older AC needs a compressor, has frequent breakdowns or uses old refrigerant, replacing it with an efficient inverter model and proper installation may cost less over time.
