Why Is Your AC Not Cooling Properly?

AC running but the room still warm? Start with these simple checks before calling for repair.

Simple checks you can do first

  • Remote settings: make sure it’s on Cool mode, not Fan or Dry, and the temperature is set to about 24°C.
  • Air filters: slide them out — if they’re grey with dust, wash them in plain water and dry fully.
  • Doors and windows: gaps and direct afternoon sun can overwhelm a small AC.
  • Outdoor unit: check that the fan is spinning and nothing is blocking airflow around it.

Common causes that need a technician

  • Dirty coils: dust on the indoor or outdoor coil blocks heat exchange. A deep service fixes this.
  • Low refrigerant: caused by a leak. You may see ice on pipes or feel weak cooling.
  • Outdoor unit not starting: often a failed capacitor, relay or fan motor.
  • Faulty sensor or PCB: the AC may switch off too early or not read room temperature correctly.
  • Compressor problems: loud noise, frequent tripping or no cooling at all.

Is your AC the right size?

An AC that’s too small for the room will run constantly without reaching the set temperature, especially on top floors and west-facing rooms in Hyderabad summers. As a rough guide, a 1 ton AC suits about 100–120 sq ft and a 1.5 ton suits about 150–180 sq ft, adjusted for sun exposure and floor level.

Hyderabad summer tips

  • Shade the outdoor unit from direct afternoon sun if possible, while keeping airflow clear.
  • Use curtains or blinds on sun-facing windows.
  • Get a service before April, before peak demand.

Frequently asked questions

Why is ice forming on my AC?

Ice on the coil or pipes usually means low refrigerant or very blocked airflow from dirty filters. Switch off the AC and get it checked.

Why does my AC cool at night but not in the afternoon?

The afternoon heat load is much higher. A slightly undersized AC or dirty outdoor coil struggles most during peak heat.
